There are many types of doughnuts to enjoy, but one classic doughnut never seems to fail: Vanilla Cream.

Joanne Chang’s Vanilla Cream-Filled Doughnuts seem to be popular in particular, as they sell out quickly every time she makes them at her Boston-based Flour Bakery + Cafe. Thankfully, even if you aren’t able to head to her bakery to get some on your own, you can recreate them at home using the recipe from her cookbook “Flour.”

One nice part of her recipe is that it doesn’t require too many ingredients: All you need is yeast, flour, sugar, salt, eggs, butter, canola oil, heavy cream and pastry cream. If you tend to bake often, you probably already have most of these ingredients in your home. However, the recipe does take a few hours to make, and you need to be somewhat familiar with pastry-making to be able to assemble the doughnuts the right way.

If her recipe seems a bit daunting, don’t fear. There are a number of other recipes available for vanilla-cream filled doughnuts that are better suited for beginners. Pillsbury has a recipe that uses their pre-made canned biscuits as doughnut dough, shaving hours off of your prep time and really cutting down on what you need to use in the kitchen.

If you want to make the best-tasting doughnuts it’s best to make sure your butter is at room temperature to help the the vanilla cream is as fluffy as possible. And if you don’t own a decorating bag, the Pillsbury website recommends using two small zipper-topped plastic bags inside one another instead. Fill the bag and cut a small hole in one bottom corner to create your own piping bag.

HALL

Harper transformed her one-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side into a vibrant retreat. She found the gilded Louis XVI mirror at a Paris flea market, and the zebra Louis XV–style bombé chest was discovered on 1stdibs.

BEATRIZ DE COSTA

Living Room

"I rarely use red," notes Harper, who nevertheless placed the hue in the details of the living room — from tassels to piping on the armchairs. "A little goes a long way." The zebra rug is vintage, purchased at London's Portobello Road market. The Ming cocktail table is by Harper's company, Lamshop.

COFFEE TABLE

"I have zebras everywhere," Harper says. "They're so graphic, and every one has a different pattern, which I find interesting." The bookcase is from C. Bell in West Palm Beach, Florida.

SIDEBOARD

Harper has infused her living room with items collected on her travels. She purchased the tapestry from an antiques store in High Point, North Carolina. The gilded apple sculpture (note the lips!) is by artist Liz Marsh.

RIGHT NIGHTSTAND

On the opposite side, Harper placed some of her favorite things: malachite, Southern art and a leopard-print turban.

Secret Doors

Check out these different ways to create your own secret doors. Using a bookcase for cover is the most popular method, but there are different styles and difficulties when it comes to the design. If bookshelves are too overdone, in your opinion, check out the last two doors that are very well hidden and pretty unique.

Secret Door Bookcase by makendo — via Instructables

This sliding bookcase door might be a bit more than many people can tackle, but the end result is simply stunning. Makendo showed off the directions for this secret door on Instructables. Not only was this bookcase built to smoothly slide open for entry, but these shelves were also built from scratch!

There are more ways to make ice cream cake than colors in the rainbow, but here is just a sample of what you can do to get started. Once you know what you are doing, you can start incorporating more elements (brownies, cookies, candies) and get fancy with the design of your finished cake (shape your cake or stack it ten layers high)!

Basic Ice Cream Cake with Fudge/Cookie Layer

If you are big fan of classic Dairy Queen cakes, then this easy ice cream cake recipe from Jessyratfink on Instructables is the way you want to go. It may take hours to actually make, because you have to wait for ice cream layers to refreeze, but it is still an easy cake to assemble.

Ice Cream Cake with Layers of Baked Cake

It wasn’t until I moved out to California that I saw an ice cream cake with actual cake layers, but it is an obvious pairing (I grew up with Dairy Queen cakes). Lindsey from Life, Love & Sugar has a great recipe that is easy to follow. All you really need to make this delicious recipe is cake mix and ice cream in your favorite flavors. So, instead of serving ice cream and cake at your next birthday party, why not combine the two and serve this delicious dessert!

Colored Rainbow Cake

If you want to go with a big impact, try this beautiful rainbow ice cream cake that was made by Jenn from Cookies, Cupcakes, and Cardio. After putting down a layer of fudge and cookie crumbles, she spread on layers of vanilla ice cream dyed with gel coloring. You can stop there or add the finishing touches — cones and additional scoops of ice cream — to complete the look. Also, don’t forget the rainbow sprinkles!

Flavored Rainbow Cake

If you want a colorful cake without having to use food coloring, try out this rainbow ice cream cake flavored with Kool-Aid. Jessyratfink is back with another great ice cream cake recipe that is beautiful and delicious! The drink mix adds a beautiful pastel color to each layer as well as a slightly tart flavor that goes splendidly with the layers of white chocolate ganache.

Rolled Ice Cream Cake

Have a little fun and do something different with this rolled ice cream cake. This gives you delicious cake and ice cream all together in a handy roll. It looks great and is really easy to serve up to your party guests. Dorothy from Crazy for Crust has a great recipe showing how to make one with neapolitan flavors, but don’t be afraid to try something crazy! And sprinkles, never forget the rainbow sprinkles.

Homemade pizza is a tempting thought, but it seems way too complicated, doesn’t it? Well, you’ll be thrilled to know that when it comes to pizza, simple is always better… especially when we’re talking pizza dough! You’ll only need four ingredients to create a delicious homemade pizza dough: water, yeast, flour, and salt. Really, that’s it!

To make one pound of pizza dough, which will yield one large pizza or two 10-inch pizzas, you will need 1 teaspoon active-dry yeast, 3/4 cup lukewarm water, 2 cups all-purpose flour, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt.

  1. Dissolve your yeast: Pour your water into a mixing bowl, and add the yeast to the water. Let stand until the yeast is dissolved.
  2. Stir in the flour and salt: Add the flour and salt to the yeast and water mixture. Stir with a sturdy spatula. You want to form a floury, loose dough.
  3. Knead the dough: Using either your hands and a counter top or the dough hook on a mixer, knead the dough for about 5 minutes. It should become smooth and slightly sticky – when you poke it, it should come back to its original shape.
  4. Rise: If you plan to use the dough right away, let it rise for one hour before use. If you’re storing it for later, check out our tips below.

That’s it – you have homemade pizza dough!

A few pizza-tastic tip:

  • This recipe makes one pound of dough (one large pizza), but can easily be scaled up for a larger crowd.
  • You can either let this dough sit in the fridge for up to three days, or freeze it for up to three months.
  • If you are using dough from the fridge, let it sit out on the counter while your oven is heating. If you’re using dough from the freezer, let it thaw in the fridge for at least 12 hours before making your pizza.
  • You want your oven as hot as it can be to make pizza – 500°F minimum, if possible.
  • Keep it simple! Too many toppings will slow down the cooking process, which can make the pizza too soggy.
